Spain’s ten most popular reads in 2014

The Fault in Our Stars, John Green's tale of teenage heartbreak, topped Spain's bestseller charts in 2014, according to a new study, which shows Spaniards opened their wallets for a mixture of home-grown talent and international authors last year.

The Fault in Our Stars, which follows a teenage cancer patient forced to attend a support group where she meets and falls in love with a handsome amputee, was brought to the big screen in 2014 which could explain it's position as Spain's number one bestseller of the year.

The John Green novel is not the only book-to-screen adaptation that made it to the top 10; Markus Zusak’s The Book Thief came in at number nine. Set in Nazi Germany, the film based on the book was released at the end of 2013.

The report into Spain’s book buying habits was compiled by consultancy Nielson using data from Bookscan, which took into account book shop and supermarket sales but not online buys, according to the Spanish Huffington Post.

The list is a mixture of Spanish-language and international authors, with five books having been written by Spanish-language writers and five by writers of other nationalities.

Popular Chilean author Isabel Allende is at number seven with Ripper, a serial-killer story set in San Francisco while the number five spot goes to E. L James’ 50 Shades of Grey, which has been incredibly popular in Spain since its publication in 2011. The film adaptation, partly shot on location in Spain's Canary Islands is due for release in early 2015.

The report provides some good news after a recent study found that 35 percent of Spaniards 'never' or 'almost never' read and that half of all Spaniards admitting to not having bought a book in the last year.
