The car-maker said the “extremely positive” results of its new Jeep Renegade and Fiat500X models meant new hires were expected over the next three months.
A temporary layoff scheme is also expected to end, with 5,418 employees set to return to the plant, it said in a statement.
“The two new models have been well received in Italy and other markets across Europe. Launched at the end of September 2014, by December the Jeep Renegade was already ranked among the top ten selling vehicles in Italy.
“The initial response to the Fiat 500X has also been positive with some 1,500 orders already,” it said.
The announcement followed the news that Indian-owned luxury car manufacturer Jaguar Land Rover plans to create 1,300 jobs in Britain to build Jaguar's first-ever sports utility vehicle.
Experts say the European auto industry, hit hard by the economic crisis, is benefiting from the downward spiral of oil prices.
