Avalanche kills fourth man in three days

An avalanche early on Wednesday afternoon saw yet another fatality, when two mountain railway employees carrying out a risk assessment of potential avalanches in the Hochfügen ski resort in the Fügenberg district of Tyrol were buried under several metres of snow.

According to mountain rescue, the two men were working on the mountain near the cable cars, building a profile of snow conditions in order to assess the risk of further avalanches.

Immediately after the avalanche was triggered, their colleagues began an urgent search, which quickly uncovered the two men.

Sadly for one of the men, help came to late, as all attempts at resuscitation were unsuccessful.

This week was disastrous for avalanche deaths, when on Monday two American skiers died at Sölden in Tyrol, and a solo Italian skier died under the snow in Gergellen in Vorarlberg.
