Italian paraglider saved from electricity cables

A paraglider in north-east Italy was saved on Sunday afternoon after his parachute became trapped in high-voltage electricity cables.

The 28-year-old man was gliding over the Venzone area, in Friuli-Venezia Giulia, when he lost altitude and crashed into the electricity cables.

Rescuers managed to see the high-voltage wires switched off as the paraglider dangled below, 15 metre above the ground.

The fire brigade was then able to free the Italian from his parachute, three hours after he became trapped, Il Messaggero reported.

Despite the winter weather the paraglider was said to be in good condition, thanks to his warm clothes and advice from medics for him to keep moving.

He escaped uninjured but was taken to hospital as a precaution, Il Messaggero said.
