The attack took place on Thursday night in the municipality of Östersund when the man was out walking his dog. He was approached by three men who asked to borrow a cigarette lighter and a mobile phone.
After refusing to hand over the items the man was pounced upon by the trio who beat him, kicked him in the head, and then kicked his dog repeatedly. The man alerted the police once the attackers fled the scene.
Officers found that the dog had been kicked to death. A large search operation was immediately deployed to try and hunt down the attackers.
Despite the manhunt the police have yet to find any witnesses and are appealing for anybody with information to come forward.
The dog's owner received several injuries in the attack but did not require hospital treatment. Police have classified the crime as assault and vandalism.
