Schumacher tops Swiss internet search list

The rehabilitation of former Formula One driving ace Michael Schumacher, severely disabled from a skiing accident a year ago, and the suicide of American comedian Robin Williams sparked the most internet searches in Switzerland for individuals in 2014, search engine Google said on Tuesday.

Schumacher, 45, whose exact condition remains unclear, is being cared for in a clinic set up at his mansion overlooking Lake Geneva in Gland, in the canton of Vaud, following the December 2013 accident at Meribel in the French Alps and after treatment at hospitals in Grenoble and Lausanne.

Conchita Wurst, the “bearded lady” from Austria who won the 2014 Eurovision Song Contest, came next in line for individual searches, followed by Academy Award winning movie actress Jennifer Lawrence and Nabilla Benattia, the Swiss model and French reality TV personality currently in jail for attempted murder after allegedly stabbing her boyfriend.

But the top ten list for internet searches in Switzerland was headed by the World Cup 2014 football tournament, in which Switzerland made it to the final 16 but lost to Argentina 0-1 after extra time.

And the second most popular search was for Apple’s iPhone6, according to Google.

Other top ten names for searches in Switzerland included the Ebola virus, Sochi, home to this year’s Winter Olympic Games and Netflix, the American video streaming service, which in September announced it was opening for business in Switzerland.

Here’s Google’s top ten list for searches in Switzerland for 2014:

1. World Cup 2014

3. Michael Schumacher

4. Robin Williams

5. Conchita Wurst

6. Ebola

7. Sochi
