Police decided to follow the two Bulgarians, aged 31 and 35, after they noticed them acting suspiciously in Rome’s Trastevere neighbourhood.
The duo were seen stopping at various ATMs as they passed through the city’s historic centre, before police intervened on Via Nazionale.
The partners in crime were carrying 25 forged credit cards, police said in a statement.
On returning to the “tourists'” hotel, close to Rome’s Termini train station, officers found a further 25 cloned cards and €3,305 in cash. They also uncovered pin codes for all 50 credit cards.
The pair were promptly arrested and are due to face a fast-track trial, police said.
