There was huge demand for tickets for the Eurovision Song Contest - to be held in Vienna in 2015 - with the first 25 percent selling out in 20 minutes this morning.

The website of the venue, the Wiener Stadthalle, crashed due to the huge demand. By noon all the available tickets for the final had been sold.

A total of 100,000 tickets for nine shows were on offer on Monday, with people still queuing outside the Stadthalle in the afternoon, hoping to purchase one.

More tickets for the coveted final will be available at the end of January.

Tickets are offered in six different categories: seats in categories A to D, up to the Gold category. Prices depend on the particular show and start at €14 for a family show (Category D obstructed view), while a card in the Gold category costs €390 for the final.

The first in line on a cold Monday morning was a young man called Dominik Berghofer, wrapped in a rainbow flag, who was outside the Stadthalle just before 5am.

"I always said that if Conchita won – and I always believed she would – I would be the first person to be standing here to buy a ticket," Berghofer told the Austrian Press Agency (APA). He ended up buying Gold tickets for himself and his friends. “They won’t be getting anything else for Christmas,” he said.

Around 400 fans joined him to wait in the cold, telling APA that this was perhaps the only chance they would get to watch the Song Contest in Austria.

Stadthalle CEO Wolfgang Fischer said the crowd was well mannered and that it “was so nice to see how happy people were when they got the tickets they wanted".
