The car – worth around €200,000 – slid off the road and sunk to the bottom of the pond, which is about two metres deep.

The driver, an engineer from Croatia, escaped with minor injuries but his car was badly damaged.

A witness to the accident called police shortly after 9pm – who were shocked when their flashlights revealed a luxury sports car and the dripping Croatian man watching his treasured possession sinking below the water.

After he lost control of the F430 – which has a top speed in excess of 315 km/h – it slid 70 metres along an embankment before landing in the pond. He was able to free himself from the car and swim to shore.

Ten divers from Velden water rescue and volunteers from the local fire department salvaged the car from the water by winching it out with a crane truck.

The driver is being treated in hospital.
