The IOC unveiled the futuristic “Olympic Unity House”, designed by Danish architectural firm 3XN, during its 127th session, which wrapped up in Monaco on Tuesday.

The three-storey structure with curving glass and steel walls set in a park next to the chateau of Vidy in the Vaud capital was selected from 118 entries in a competition launched by the committee more than a year ago.

The concept ensures that the new building “authentically reflects Olympism, the Olympic Movement and the role of the IOC as a catalyst for collaboration in an iconic and transparent way,” the IOC session was told.

The new building is meant to be a “welcoming home for IOC members and the meeting place for the entire Olympic Movement”, the committee said in a news release.

“The IOC Session was presented today with an architectural project that will allow the IOC to benefit from a modern, functional and sustainable working environment”, IOC Director General Christoph de Kepper said.

The IOC administration (around 600 employees) will be brought together at Olympic Unity House in a single location in Vidy, resulting in substantial long-term savings, increased working efficiency and energy conservation, he said.

With this project, the IOC said it aims to demonstrate leadership in terms of sustainability.

The “highest possible” sustainability certification level will be considered, and studies are currently ongoing to define which labels are the most suitable to the new building, the committee said.

No timeline was announced for the building but it is expected to go through the municipal approval process next year, when the IOC celebrates its 100th anniversary in Lausanne.
