Dec. 16: The “Accidental” Menace: Turkey, Islamic State, Kurdistan (Lund)

Panel discussion about Turkey and the Islamic State

Convenor: Umut Ozkirimli (CMES, Lund University)

Moderator: Magnus Jerneck (Department of Political Science, Lund University)

Speakers:

  • Soli Ozel (Kadir Has University, Istanbul): "Turkish foreign policy and Kurdish political resurrection"
  • Spyros A. Sofos (CMES, Lund University): "Everything you would like to know about the Islamic State and a few things you wouldn't"

About Spyros' talk: Drawing on extensive research on its brief career (its emergence, evolution, organizational and recruitment structures, domestic and international discourse and practices) and with the aid of visual material from the territories it holds, this paper will try to address the phenomenon of the Islamic State. What is and what is not the Islamic State, how has it managed to become a reality on the ground and a household name throughout the world, how does it control its territories and populations, how is everyday life organized in its Syrian and Iraqi 'provinces'.

When: December 16th, 18:30

Where: Statsvetenskapliga institutionen Eden 263, Lund University
