Spotify targets Stockholm Uber taxis

Taxi journeys in the Swedish capital are about to get a little less peaceful for many drivers, as music streaming giant Spotify teams up with rent-a-driver app Uber, to allow passengers sync their playlists to car speakers.

Customers with premium Spotify accounts will be able to listen to their own music as well as select music from special Uber playlists.

The idea is that "when your ride arrives, your tunes will be playing on the speakers," reads Spotify's press release.

The service launches in the Swedish capital on Friday 21st November, as well as in nine other global cities including London, Sydney and Singapore.

Uber said it was up to drivers whether or not they decided to take part in the scheme and that they would have control over the volume of the music.

There has been a taxi war going on in Stockholm, ever since Uber launched in Sweden in 2013.

The service allows customers to book a ride through an app on their smartphone or tablet, often for a cheaper price than traditional minicab firms.

Taxi Stockholm has recently sought publicity for a number of its own novelty initiatives, from giving customers free therapists to a contest to win a two week journey in a Swedish cab.

Meanwhile Spotify has spent the past few weeks fighting off accusations that it does not fairly compensate artists, after US star Taylor Swift withdrew her music from the catalogue.
