Speed limit lowered on Tyrol motorways

Tyrol’s governor Günther Platter (ÖVP) has signed the relevant regulation, according to the Austrian Press Agency (APA).

Austrian motorways (autobahns) have a general speed limit of 130 km/h (unlike German motorways). The 100 km/h limit will be enforced on the A12 between Kufstein and Zirl, and Imst and Zams, and on the A13 between Innsbruck and Schönberg.

The ÖVP had argued against introducing the 100 km/h speed limit but coalition partner the Greens said that it was necessary to improve air quality and it is one of the measures recommended by the European Commission.

Tyrol already has various schemes on the A12 motorway to reduce pollution. There is a night-driving ban on pre-Euro 6 lorries over 3.5T, a sectoral driving ban for lorries over 7.5T, and a ban on overtaking for lorries over 3.5T.
