Sweden’s Ace of Base revived with teen band

Following very much in the footsteps of the short-lived A*Teens cover band which paid homage to Abba in the noughties, the new teenage pop quartet started selling their debut single on Friday. 

The song is a makeover of the original group's 1995 hit 'Never Gonna Say I'm Sorry' and has already been dubbed a "slick, clean and very faithful update" by Time Magazine.

A*Base were formed in 2012 and the band made up of four singers, Matilda Lundberg, Malin Enstedt, Alexander Beyer, and Emil Henrohn, aged between 15 and 17. It's believed they spent two years recording their debut album of Ace of Base hits titled Happy Generation.

The band said on Twitter that a video to accompany their first track would be released shortly.

Ace of Base had a string of hits during the 90s including the anthemic All That She Wants, selling more than 30 million records during their career.

But news of the teenage tribute act came as some suprise to the original members of the Swedish supergroup. 

"No I didn't know anything about this but it's fun that it lives on," singer Jenny Bergrren told Swedish newspaper Aftonbladet.

Former bandmate Ulk Ekberg said he had heard rumours about the project, before the announcement was made in a press release.

"It is very flattering. It worked out well for A-teens," Ekberg told Aftonbladet.

The group also expressed their support for the new group on Twitter earlier this week.

Comparisons with the A*Teens Abba tribute band are inevitable. In the late 90s and early 2000s the self-styled teenage tribute band enjoyed considerable success with their interpretation of Abba's greatest hits.

In 2004 the group split and have since turned down repeated requests to reform, much like the original members of Abba have over the years.

Ace of Base are one of Sweden's most successful pop exports, behind only Abba and Roxette in terms of record sales. The group continues to perform but hasn't enjoyed a hit since their 90s heyday having experimented with the line-up.

Of the original line-up only Jonas Berggren and Ulk Ekberg remain, while siblings Linn Bergrren and Jenny Berggren have since left to pursue solo careers.
