‘We’re at war with the ECB, not Isis’: Grillo

Beppe Grillo, the leader of Italy’s Five Star Movement, said on Wednesday that the European Central Bank was a bigger enemy than either the Islamic militant group, Isis, or Russia.

“We’re not at war with Isis or Russia, but the ECB!” he said ahead of a speech at the European Parliament, while also calling the latter institution “Europe’s biggest polluter”, Corriere reported.

Grillo was in Brussels to present his campaign for pulling Italy out of the European single currency, and also used the opportunity to take a swipe at both Germany and the new European Commission President, Jean-Claude Juncker, Luxembourg’s former finance and prime minister.

Germany is “more corrupt and has more mafia than Italy”, he said of Italy's northern EU counterpart.

Juncker, who stepped into the EC post on November 1st, came under fire last week after it was revealed that Luxembourg had struck secret tax deals with over 300 multinationals, including several Italian firms.

"Juncker? He's the ex-finance minister of a fiscal paradise," Grillo added.

The Five Star Movement leader continued his rant by saying the party had brought about a revolution in Italy and that if it fails, “the Nazis are coming”.

He claimed that several million signatures had been collected in favour of a euro referendum in Italy.

“We want to regain our monetary sovereignty,” he said.
