The man had lost the wallet, containing credit cards, his British passport, receipts and various other papers, while travelling by train from Zurich to Geneva, Chur city police police from the canton of Graubünden said on Monday.

The wallet was found in a shopping centre in Chur last month, police said.

It was turned into the lost and found office of the police department, where officers were able to track down the whereabouts of its owner — in the US.

The wallet’s unidentified owner was surprised and happy about the discovery, according to a report from the SDA news agency.

How the wallet and its contents — the passport has long since expired — ended up in a Chur shopping centre is not clear.

It is also not clear whether there was any money in the wallet when it went missing.

Chur police issued a photo of the missing wallet and passport, which have been sent to its owner.
