Sweden records warmest October day in 63 years

Tuesday was particularly warm - at least by Swedish standards - and one town recorded the hottest October day since 1951.

Sweden records warmest October day in 63 years

The town of Kristianstad in southern Sweden saw the mercury reach 17.7C on Tuesday.

"You would have to go all the way back to 1951 to find temperatures that high so late in October," said Marcus Sjöstedt, a meteorologist at Sweden's weather agency SMHI.

Most of the lower half of Sweden enjoyed pleasant weather on Tuesday, with highs of around 15C widespread.

But sun seekers shouldn't get too excited, as the cold weather was already back with a vengeance on Wednesday.

SMHI warned against icy roads in the north and predicted temperatures to dip below zero in the night.

When asked how severe the Swedish winter was looking, Sjöstedt refused to hazard a guess.

"We only work with a ten-day prognosis, so it is tough to predict anything at all about the coming winter," he told the TT news agency.
