Despite the daylight hours getting fewer and fewer, Swedes can at least look forward to a few sunny days this week.

The national weather agency SMHI said that the temperatures will be in double figures.

Tuesday should see the mercury 17C in some parts of the country, with Stockholm expecting sunshine and 16C.

"It's been much warmer than usual over the past few days," meteorologist Therese Fougman told the TT news agency.

She explained that the increasing temperatures were due to a high-pressure system moving between Portugal and Russia, meaning warm winds from the south west were passing up into Sweden.

The news will surely come as a welcome relief to Sweden's northern half, which has already seen a deal of snow, and for those on the west coast who saw flooding over the weekend.

Meteorologists promised that temperatures would be back to normal by the end of the week.
