Minister of Health, Bent Høie, annnounced the decision and said to NTB: “We have heard too many stories of sick people having to deal with many different doctors and having to tell their sickness story again and again. This is a strain that seriously ill persons and their next to kin should be saved from.”
Per Fugelli, a well-known Norwegian physician and professor of medicine, is among those who demanded the move after himself having to relate to 37 different doctors as a cancer patient. On Friday, Høie sent out a paper about changes in patient care and the right for a dedicated GP was one of the proposals.
The Minister of Health stated the aim is that patients and their families should feel safer and relieved from the strain of having to relate to many different doctors. The quality of treatments should also improve as part of the new initiative, plus it should take less time to get answers to patients' questions.
Høie said: “By introducing a dedicated general practitioner, we don't only give patients better follow-up and information, but we also take better advantage of the resources of the health and care services.”
