Madonna in sisterhood pledge with singing nun

Pop star Madonna has pledged lifelong sisterhood with an Italian nun who released a remake of her provocative 1984 hit, Like A Virgin, earlier this week.

In a Twitter post on Thursday, the singer wrote "Sisters for Life! #touchedfortheveryfirsttime", in response to the announcement earlier this week that Sister Cristina, who won the Italian edition of The Voice in May, would release Like A Virgin as the first song on her debut album.

The tweet came a few hours after another one saying "Like A Virgin? #bitinghard", alongside a photo of her and Sister Cristina in their own versions of the song.

But the choice of song has drawn criticism from those in Catholic quarters.

In an editorial on the Servizio Informazione Religiosa (Religious Information Service) news agency on Wednesday, the move was described as a “reckless and sly commercial operation”.

The editorial also said it was a “blessed naivety” to interpret the song as “something more akin to a prayer”.

In contrast to the original clip where Madonna cavorts around Venice in a white wedding dress accompanied by a man dressed as a lion, Sister Cristina’s version, which is also set in the canal city, is more like a religious hymn than a pop song.

The singing nun, a reformed rebel from Sicily, has described it as a “song about the ability of love to renew people”.

The song will be just one of the tracks on the nun’s first album, to be released on November 11th.
