Since first appearing on the big screen in 1982’s Labyrinth of Passions, an early Pedro Almodóvar romp, Antonio Banderas has been nothing if not busy.
Almost 100 movies later, during which time he has presumably become the only actor to play Benito Mussolini and Che Guevara, it was announced this week that the 54-year-old is to be awarded the Goya of Honour by the Spanish Film Academy.
The Academy, which will present the actor with his award at the Goyas ceremony on February 8th, paid tribute on Monday to Banderas’s "brilliant career on both sides of the Atlantic in which he has shown great versatility as an actor, his own point of view as a director, as well as throwing himself into the field of production in support of Spanish projects".
Banderas’s two forays into direction so far have been Crazy in Alabama (1999) and El camino de los ingleses (2006), set and filmed in his native Malaga.
