Guided by his Agila GPS device, the 77-year-old entered the Rome to Naples motorway at Frosinone on Sunday afternoon, and drove for 15km in the opposite direction to the oncoming traffic, Corriere reported.

The alarm was soon raised by panicked motorists to the traffic police, who managed to slow down the traffic and avoid collisions with the priest’s car, which had been travelling along the third lane, reportedly at high speed.

The cleric, from Rome, was eventually stopped in a lay-by at the Agnagni exit, but was reportedly unable to explain his error.

He lost his driving licence and was slapped with a fine of between €2,000 and €8,000, Corriere reported.
