Flash floods: woman dies in Canary Islands

Heavy rain caused chaos in the Canary Island city of Santa Cruz de Tenerife on Sunday with one woman dying after she found herself trapped underneath a parked car during flash flooding.

The torrential rainfall that hit Spain's Tenerife Island has left a 56-year-old woman dead.

The woman died after flash flooding in the city's Avenida de Venezuela knocked both her and her husband off their feet.

They found themselves trapped under a parked car when the woman suffered a heart attack, regional daily Canarias 7 reported.

Health workers were unable to revive her when they arrived on the scene.

Elsewhere across the island, the autumn storms saw businesses and garages flooded while landslides caused road closures.

A local in El Cardonal said "vehicles were going down the street WITHOUT drivers"

Periods of light rain were forecast for Tenerife on Monday with these expected to clear through the afternoon.
