The crowdfunding website Kickstarter officially opened in Scandinavia and Ireland on Monday, allowing Danish users to set up projects in the local currency and language.
Although there won’t be a separate Kickstarter site for Denmark, all Denmark-based projects will be searchable on the site.
“H.C. Andersen and Lars von Trier. Victor Borge and Lego and the Royal Danish Ballet. Bang & Olufsen and some very, very beautiful chairs. What are you going to create?,” Kickstarter wrote in a blog post announcing the Danish launch.
Entrepreneurs and start-ups in Scandinavia and Ireland can now start creating Kickstarter projects and on October 21st they will go live.
“We know that in Denmark and Copenhagen there are a lot of creative people who start projects that would be perfect for Kickstarter,” spokeswoman Julie Wood told Politiken, adding that over 20,000 Danes have already teamed up with people in other countries to launch Kickstarter projects.
Kickstarter is a site that allows individuals to present creative projects to a like-minded community. The projects are then funded by typically small donations from supporters, who sometimes are given something in exchange for their financial backing – a copy of the finished product, their name in the credits of a film, and so on.
Only projects that reach their stated goal get funding. If the target is not reached, supporters who pledged money have it returned.
According to the site, seven million people worldwide have backed a Kickstarter project and 243,000 have backed ten or more projects.
Kickstarter will compete in the Danish market with Booomerang.dk, a crowdfunding site launched in 2011.
