German man stabs four policemen in Rome

A homeless German man was arrested on Wednesday after allegedly stabbing four policemen in the centre of Rome, with one witness describing "panic in the street" as the attacker flew at his victims with a knife and hammer.

The man, identified as 62-year-old Klaus Dieter Bogner, had reportedly been threatening passersby with a hammer in Piazza della Libertà, Ansa reported.

Two policemen tried to stop the man who then attacked them with the hammer. When more police arrived Bogner allegedly attacked them with a knife.

One of the policemen, a lieutenant colonel, suffered knife wounds to his abdomen and thigh and is being treated at the Santo Spirito hospital.

Another officer was also admitted to the hospital with multiple injuries, while the other two officers were taken to the San Carlo di Nancy hospital with minor injuries.

The alleged attacker was taken to hospital under police escort at around 8.00pm yesterday with wounds to his feet.

Bogner, described as a homeless German man, now faces charges of attempted murder.

Quoted in Il Messaggero, the lieutenant colonel, named as Claudio Rubertà said: “It’s a miracle I’m alive. I was fine, it was a matter of centimetres. If the blade had gone any deeper then it could have been the end.”

A woman working at a pharmacy on the square told Ansa the attack was like a scene from a “detective film”.

“I was really scared. There was panic in the street. I heard a scream and I went outside and saw the policemen running behind the man who had a hammer and was threatening everyone,” she said.

“The chase ended right outside the pharmacy. The policemen were injured and I saw lots of blood, so I gave them first aid bringing disinfectant and gauze to treat the injured policemen.”

Defence Minister Roberta Pinotti, meanwhile, has expressed her solidarity for the four policemen.

“I am worried about the wounding of policemen recently in Rome and I offer them my solidarity. It’s important not to let a climate of hate grow against the police,” she said.

Rome’s public transport fares set to rise this summer

The cost of Rome’s bus, metro and tram tickets was expected to increase this summer under a new pricing plan, according to Italian media reports.

Rome’s public transport fares set to rise this summer

The cost of a ticket will go from €1.50 to €2 as of July 1st when new pricing is set to come in for Rome’s public transport system, according to local newspaper RomaToday.

The published plan for the new ticket prices was drafted by Lazio regional coach company Cotral, a partner in the capital’s Metrebus service along with Trenitalia and Rome transport provider ATAC.

While the 100-minute ticket will see a 50-cent increase to €2, the price of daily tickets will go up from €7 to €9.30.

The two-day ticket would jump from €12.50 to €16.70 and the 72-hour ticket goes from €18 to €24.

Weekly tickets rise by €8 to €32. Monthly passes remain unchanged at the usual €35 fee.

The cost of a yearly pass meanwhile drops by €10 to €240.

Talk of raising Rome’s public transport prices has been ongoing for years; the last time bus and metro tickets were increased was in 2012, from €1 to €1.50.

The latest announcement came exactly one year after ATAC announced Rome transport fees would not be raised as planned following an intervention by Lazio regional authorities.

But the price increase was expected to go ahead this year, with Rome currently preparing its public transport network for increased visitor numbers ahead of the Vatican’s 2025 Jubilee.
