Pupils stranded upon glacier overnight

The incident began on Tuesday afternoon after 15 high school pupils and their teacher became stranded on the Jostedalsbreen glacier in west Norway. Weather condition quickly changed around 5pm on Tuesday, bringing a dense fog and forcing the group to take camp 2,000 meters above sea-level.

The group was brought down early Wednesday morning by helicopter, but only after the first rescue attempt on Tuesday night had to be aborted due to the weather.

The rescued party was taken to the nearby Jostedal Hotel where ambulance and police were on hand to take care of them. Nobody was injured, Sogn & Fjordane police have confirmed.

Police chief Per Rimmen said to NRK: “They are in good shape. The two first [students] being picked up, were the most affected by hypothermia, but there was an ambulance ready from where they landed.”
