Moscow and Vienna present a Tale of 2 Cities

Moscow's Museum of Modern Art and the Jewish Museum Vienna are collaborating on a new exhibition called Tales of 2 Cities.

The exhibition looks back at both cities' pasts and is organised in cooperation with the human rights society Memorial and the Austrian Cultural Forum Moscow as a part of Russia’s Austrian season of culture 2013/14.

Memorial, based in Moscow, and the Jewish Museum Vienna have a significant collection of artefacts relating to repression and human rights violations – both in the Soviet Union and under the National Socialists.

These served as inspiration for six artists from Russia and Austria who have created new works which will go on display in Moscow and Vienna.

Vienna is represented by artists Zenita Komad, Ekaterina Shapiro-Obermair, Hans Weigand, and Moscow by Olga Jitlina, Haim Sokol, and Alisa Yoffe.

The artists have created their own work that on one side reflects the past and the stories of the museum artefacts, and on the other side develops new stories. “The exhibition draws on historical sources but is primarily an artistic project,” a press release from Moscow’s Austrian Cultural Forum said.

The central point of the project is memorabilia – historical items that belong to different people and eras. Many of the items wouldn’t seem to have any significant historical value at first glance – but the meaning of these objects lies primarily in the personal stories related to them.

The exhibition opens in Moscow on September 15th and transfers to Vienna’s Jewish Museum in January 2015.
