Two Salafists – who believe in an extreme form of Islam – were arrested at the German-Austrian border accused of intending to join jihadists in the Middle East.
According to Bavaria Interior Minister Joachim Herrmann, they intended to travel to Syria.
One of the men arrested at the German-Austrian border town of Simbach am Inn last week is believed to have been trying to recruit jihad fighters for Syria.
The men were stopped while travelling in a bus to Salzburg. They were unable to show their proper identity documents, broadcaster Bayerischer Rundfunk reported on Tuesday, and therefore aroused suspicion.
Two Germans, meanwhile, were arrested in Kenya on terror charges, accused of being members of Somali terror group al-Shabaab, Kenyan media reported.
Kenya’s Standard newspaper said that two men with German citizenship were arrested on August 29th in Nairobi. Kenyan authorities then alerted their counterparts in Germany to the three suspected Islamist fighters who were seized at Frankfurt Airport on Saturday.
The two arrested in Kenya include a German native and a German of Somali origin identified as Abdiwahid Warsame, the Standard reported.
The Foreign Office confirmed the arrests in Kenya.
