The gambler in Malmö won the money after playing the Swedish equivalent of the football pools known as Stryktipset. Players fill out their predictions for football matches on a coupon and can win big if their tips come off.

For one man in southern Sweden this was the case as he saw the weekend results matched his tips on the coupon. However, he had left the winning ticket in a local tobacco shop where it was swiped by a girl who showed the ticket to her mother.

After seeing his results come in the man found out he was due to earn 524,126 kronor. He contacted the shop where he made the bet, only to be told that the money had already been claimed.

The state owned Swedish gaming operation (Svenska Spel) confirmed to the man that the money was gone after he had asked them to block the payment. He was able to track down the person who claimed the cash with the help of a bank.

Local newspaper Sydsvenskan reported that the woman found three coupons and showed them to her mother. She claimed that she did not contact the police after discovering their worth, but said she reached out to Svenska Spel instead.

The woman said that Svenska Spel told her that they were unlikely to be able to help her find the original owner. She added that she did all she could and denied the charge of fraudulent conversion.

The man is now suing the two women and demanding they pay him the money back.
