Switzerland second most expensive for flights

Finland tops the list as the most expensive country in which to fly, with fares costing $138.90 per 100km, while Lithuania ($166.72) came in third.

India is the cheapest country in which to fly, with fares costing just $10.36 per 100km.

Spain is the cheapest country in Europe ($13.21 per 100km).

The study, by the travel website GoEuro.com, compared average fares — not just for flights, but also train and bus journeys — in 51 countries across five continents.

Switzerland was also was rated the second most expensive country for train travel ($38.28 per 100km), after Denmark, while it placed fourth most expensive for bus travel ($18.67), after the Netherlands, Austria and Norway. 

The cheapest country for bus travel was found to be Egypt, where journeys typically cost $1.88 per 100km.

South African enjoys the cheapest travel overall, the study claims, with airfares costing $11.63, and the most cost-effective rail network.

Albania came in second place after South Africa.

The study notes that as investment in infrastructure and quality of service are defining factors in the cost of transportation, countries with higher costs are very likely to be the ones with better service.

The results have not been weighted against GDP per capita of the countries involved, and therefore do not reflect incomes.
