The supermarket chains SuperBest and Eurospar will disappear from the Danish landscape as part of a move to bring the Norwegian brand Meny to Denmark, the Dagrofa Group announced on Thursday.
Dagrofa, which runs the two supermarket chains, said that new Meny stores should see the light of day by summer 2015.
“We can see that the line between smaller supermarkets and the discount chains is disappearing. If shops don’t have strong roots in the local community or are unique in some way, they face a choice: either develop until a modern food boutique or turn into a discount store. Today’s market doesn’t allow for a cost-competitive middle position,” Dagrofa’s managing director, Per Thau, said in a press release.
The loss of SuperBest stores could be felt by Denmark’s expat community as some locations have gained a cult following for their ‘American’ sections that offer items such as PopTarts and Mountain Dew that can be difficult to find.
Thau said that the fate of the individual SuperBest and Eurospar locations would depend on their local support. While some will become Meny stores, others will be turned in to discount stores baring the Spar or Kiwi name, the latter of which recently announced plans to drop prices on all fruits and vegetables.
