The paintings give an insight into the private lives of Austria and Bavaria’s royal families.  Several of the paintings, including Empress Elisabeth of Austria on Horse by Franz Adam, were previously unknown.

Paintings such as Portrait of Archduchess Marie Valerie of Austria by Hans Makart depicts the Archduchess as a toddler and offers a rare glimpse into the sheltered life of the royal court. Marie Valerie was said to be the Empress’s favourite child and the painting was commissioned by the Emperor for his wife.

Other works are reminders of some of the personal tragedies the Austrian royal family experienced.

An oil painting entitled Crown Prince Rudolf of Austria depicts the prince on a horse. He was said to have stood for the portrait only days before his suicide with his mistress at Mayerling Palace. He killed himself shortly after leaving his uniform at the artist’s studio for more detailed work.

The auction will take place on September 24th at 6pm in Munich. A selection of the works can be viewed from September 10th to 13th at Neumeisters branch in Vienna.
