Finland tops the list as the most expensive country in which to fly, with fares costing €107.21 per 100km, followed by Switzerland and then Lithuania.

India is the cheapest country in which to fly, with fares costing just €8 per 100km. Spain is the cheapest country in Europe (€10.20 per 100km).

The study, by the travel website GoEuro.com, compared average fares – not just for flights, but also train and bus journeys – in 51 countries across five continents.

Austria was the third most expensive country for train travel (€24.82 per 100km), after Denmark and Switzerland. It placed second most expensive for bus travel (€18.09), after the Netherlands.

The cheapest country for bus travel was found to be Egypt, where journeys typically cost €1.45 per 100km.

South Africans enjoy the cheapest travel overall, it claims, with airfares costing €8.98, and the country having the most cost-effective rail network. Albania came in second place after South Africa.

The study notes that as investment in infrastructure and quality of service are defining factors in the cost of transportation, countries with higher costs are very likely to be the ones with better service.

The results have also not been weighted against GDP per capita of the countries involved, and therefore do not reflect wages.
