The Danish summer music festival scene just got a bit more crowded. 

 

Odense Council announced on Tuesday that a new three-day festival will be held in June 2015. Right out of the gates, it sounds as if it has set its sights on challenging the Roskilde Festival, which is traditionally held over the first week of July. 

 

“The ambition is for the festival to be of such a high quality and with such an attractive program and set-up that it within a few years can be one of the country’s largest and can help to brand Odense as a big city with a very strong cultural offerings,” the city’s mayor, Anker Boye, said in a press release. 

 

According to the press release, “several recognised actors in the Danish and European festival scene” are behind the coming festival, which will be held in the 74-hectare park and forest area Tusindårsskoven, near the city centre. Although the press release didn’t reveal the festival’s name, industry rumours say it will be called Tinderbox.

 

The new festival will join a crowded field. In addition to Roskilde Festival, the granddaddy of them all, Aarhus’s Northside Festival has grown increasingly popular over its four year history and has expanded from a one-day affair to a full three-day festival. Copenhagen’s Vanguard Festival has already announced that it will be back for a third year in 2015, while the city’s heavy metal themed Copenhell will be celebrating its sixth year in 2015. Meanwhile, a number of festivals featuring primarily Danish music acts, such as Smukfest and the multi-city Grøn Koncert festival, also continue to draw large crowds.
