Lene Marlin reveals suicide attempt

Musician Lene Marlin has won praise from fans and critics after her openness about depression and a suicide attempt due to the pressures of work and fame.

The Norwegian pop star wrote candidly in Aftenposten about a mental breakdown she suffered when she first found fame fifteen years ago.

She stated: “It's a part of me. I live with it every day and will carry it with me for the rest of my life. I can just as well say it out loud, that I tried taking my own life. That I couldn't handle the constant pressure.”
 
The 34-year-old wrote the article to give inspiration to others having a hard time.
 
Lene wrote: “So if you who read this aren't having such a good time right now, not being able to see how life can ever improve: Please, keep going just a little longer! Believe me, it's worth it!”
 
The song artist, who is originally from Tromsø, North Norway, received praise for her openness, including from the world of politics.
 
Norwegian politician Knut Arild Hareide tweeted: “Lene Marlin’s article makes a strong impression. It’s an important contribution to openness and shows real bravery.”
 
Eskil Pedersen, chairman of AUF (Worker’s Youth League) was also impressed. He said: “Martin is open and patient. I think it will help a lot of people who are hurt.”
 
On Tuesday, Aftenposten also published  a NOVA survey of 63,000 secondary school students. It showed one in four girls in 10th grade have depressive symptoms.
