The 50-year-old woman was walking with her husband in the Parcines area, close to the Swiss border, when the accident happened.
She lost her footing on the Franz Huber path and fell 100 metres to her death, Ansa reported. A mountain rescue team and helicopter were brought in to recover her body.
The death is the latest to hit mountainous northern Italy. Earlier this month one hiker froze to death after getting lost, while another fell down a cliff. A week earlier, a German tourist died while climbing in Italy’s Alto Adige region.
In Switzerland, a German man in the Bernese Alps slipped on a snowy path and fell hundreds of metres to his death.

Across the border in France, the summer has been one of the deadliest on record on Mont Blanc.
Six French climbers died on August 12th when climbing towards the 3,902 metre Aiguille d'Argentière in the Mont Blanc massif. Two Belgians died in Mont Blanc at the start of the month, while between July 15th and July 30ths a further six climbers lost their lives.
