Employees of a company which searches for war relics found the shells on Thursday afternoon on the track between Frauenkirchen und St. Andrä am Zicksee, Burgenland’s National Police Directorate said.
The find was handed over to a bomb squad for disposal. To ensure safety, the rail operator is currently scanning the tracks for any more WWII debris. Five explosive shells were recently discovered on the line between Neusiedl am See and Frauenkirchen.
In early July a woman from Burgenland was bathing in Lake Neusiedl, in Oggau, when she stepped on a 20 centimetre long shell which luckily failed to detonate.
