They were driving a hired Fiat 600 when it veered off a road and fell seven metres, landing in front of the Continental Mare hotel in the town of Sant’Alessandro, La Repubblica reported.

It is unclear how the accident happened, but police believe the driver may have suffered a sudden illness or the car’s brakes were faulty.

“I still can’t believe it and express my deepest sympathy for what happened,” Mario Leonessa, a representative for Leohotels, where the couple had been saying, was quoted as saying.

The tragedy came less than two weeks after an Italian tourist, Filippo Vinaccio, drowned while swimming off the island’s San Francesco beach.
