The fish trader in Forlì filed an annual tax return which put his yearly income at just €10,000, Italy’s financial police said on Wednesday.
But suspicions were raised and the authorities went to search his home, where they discovered the businessman had a penchant for expensive cars.
A Ferrari 360 Modena – with an estimated value of €90,000 – was parked up alongside a Mercedes ML320.
When contacted by The Local, the financial police were not available to comment on the investigation. Italian media however said the businessman had already come under the spotlight for “forgetting” to issue receipts, a sign of tax evasion.
The authorities then probed the running of the fish seller’s warehouse, tracing his suppliers and clients, Il Secolo XIX reported.
He now has to answer to a €210,000 tax bill, the financial police said.
