The pensioner, who had spent her summer holidays at Portlligat beach in Cadaqués (Girona) for the past ten years, was hit by the rock as she was sunbathing.
Emergency services rushed to the scene of the accident after receiving a call from a witness but nothing could be done to bring the woman back to life, Spanish news agency Europa Press reported.
Cadaqués fire brigade has not yet determined the reason why the rock fell off the cliff next to where the woman was sunbathing, although there are some suggestions recent heavy rainfall may have had an influence.
Local police cordoned off the cove while emergency services took away the woman’s body.
