UPDATE: Bornholm feels rare earthquake

UPDATE, Aug 18 at 12.25pm:

 

The Geological Survey of Denmark and Greenland (GEUS) reported on Monday that the earthquake felt shortly after midnight on Bornholm measured 2.6 on the Richter scale. The quake's epicentre was determined to be roughly 10km off of the island's southern tip.

 

"Even though the earthquake was small, it was clearly felt on Bornholm. The earthquake was registered by seismographs as far away as Norway," GEUS reported. 

 

GEUS said that it has never previously registered an earthquake in that area. 

 

ORIGINAL, Aug 17 at 1.03pm:

 

An earthquake was registered on or near the island of Bornholm shortly after midnight on Sunday, the Geological Survey of Denmark and Greenland (GEUS) reported.

 

Bornholm Police reported receiving several calls between 12.36am and 12.42am from residents reporting the quake. 

 

GEUS confirmed the earthquake but because the centre is closed on the weekends, it was unable to report its magnitude. 

 

According to Ritzau, the most powerful earthquake in recent Danish history was one that measured 4.8 on the Richter scale in December 2008. That one was centered in Skåne, Sweden but was felt in many parts of eastern Denmark. 

 

The most recent earthquake registered in Denmark was a 4.7 quake that struck off the coast of Thy in February 2010.
