Norway police want to carry arms

The increased level of terror threats in Norway has made a strong case for arming the police at all times, said the leader of the Norwegian Police Federation on Monday.

Sigve Bolstad, leader of the Norwegian Police Federation, now believes weapons should remain on the hips of all police, even though the recent threat has been downgraded, said “Klassekampen”.

Bolstad said: “I will not use the terror threat as a main argument for Norwegian police becoming armed by default. But an increased threat level in future is just one of several arguments for a general armament.”

The recent terror threat in Norway caused an increased security alert level last week as police were forced to put more armed personnel on the streets, at airports and at border entry points.

The police chief also pointed to the fact Oslo police experienced substantially less criminality over the weekend armed police were on the streets.

The Norwegian Police Federation voted for a general armament of the police in their national congress of 2012.

The government has not reached any conclusions on the debate yet. Ulf Leirstein, member of the committee of justice for FrP, said he expected a solution from the government during autumn this year.
