Muslim leaders must take more responsibility for stopping hardline extremism, said Norway's Labour Party chairman on Tuesday, in the wake of the terror alerts in Norway.

Jonas Gahr Støre believes an important responsibility to curb extremism in Norway rests upon the shoulders of Muslim leaders.

The politician said to the newspaper “Dagsavisen”: “Being a big society, we have a common responsibility to prevent [extremism].”

Støre believes preventing extremism happens in everyday life – among friends, families, associations, and religious circles.

He advised Muslim leaders should be careful when influencing the choices of people, and said: “An important responsibility rests upon the shoulders of the mosque, and I want to encourage leaders to take this responsibility seriously, preferably in a good dialogue with the local police.”

Støre says: “Muslims in Norway are just as clear on marking their distance from violence and terror as others. They don't deserve to be suspiciously looked upon because of their faith.”
