The Society for the Protection of Animals of the two Basels (TBB) is staging a trip to Germany’s Black Forest from July 31st to August 3rd so that dogs can spend the noisy holiday period in peace, reports 20 Minutes.
The idea, new this year, is a popular one. “We are already full,” Béatrice Kirn, director of TBB, told the paper.
Alain Zwygart of the Vaud Society for the Protection of Animals (SVPA) welcomed the “revelatory” initiative.
“There are few places in our country which are calm during the national festival,” he said.
It is important to protect animals from stress during the period, he added, “because some dogs will vomit or defecate if they are scared.”
TBB’s Kirn told 20 Minutes that dogs born in Switzerland have fewer problems than those arriving from abroad, for whom an explosion is often associated with a negative.
With time that reaction can be changed, she said.
For several years TBB has trained dogs to become accustomed to fireworks using a CD featuring recordings of explosives.
