The Bayern Munich midfielder, tipped as Germany’s next captain after the retirement of Philipp Lahm, can be seen on the holiday video insulting the players and fans of Bayern Munich’s rival club, Borussia Dortmund (BVB).

In the grainy footage from his holiday in Croatia he is wearing a baseball hat with a towel around his neck and surrounded by merry fans.

The 29-year-old then leads the chant: “BVB, sons of whores.”

Schweinsteiger won the World Cup playing alongside Borussia Dortmund players and after the footage, which has been viewed almost 200,000 times, was posted on YouTube he put a video on his Facebook page to apologize.

“Hello, I’m talking to you from my holiday because it's come to my attention that a video of me has been put online. I would like to apologize to all fans and players of Borussia Dortmund," he said.

But BVB wrote on their Facebook page they understood things could get rowdy after a few celebratory World Cup wheat beers.

“We’ve always thought of you as a fair sportsman, would never have stirred up trouble about your song and accept your apology of course," the club wrote.
