The Danish Security and Intelligence Service (Politiets Efterretningstjeneste – PET) is keeping a close watch on developments in Norway after security police there warned of an “imminent” terror attack. 

 

“We are following the situation in Norway closely, but our assessment of the terror threat against Denmark remains unchanged for now ,” PET’s Mads Hansen told Jyllands-Posten.

 

Speaking to Politiken, Hansen stressed that PET always coordinates with neighbouring countries but declined to comment on to what degree Danish police were involved in the current Norwegian developments.

 

The Norwegian Security Police (PST) said on Thursday that people with connections to an extremist group in Syria intend to carry out an attack on Norway “within a few days from now”. 

 

“The PST has warned several times that extremist Islamist groups in Syria intend to carry out terror attacks in Norway. We often receive such information, but often it turns out to be inaccurate. However, on this occasion our suspicions have been backed up,” PST chief Benedicte Bjørnland told a press conference in Oslo on Thursday. 

 

“The resulting investigation we have carried out leads us to believe that this is credible, while unspecific. This is related to people who have participated in fighting in Syria,” she said.

Denmark has consistently warned against the threat of Danes fighting in Syria and returning radicalised. An analysis released by Denmark’s Center for Terror Analysis in June estimated that at least 100 individuals have left Denmark to fight in Syria and that at least 15 of them have died.

 

Earlier this month, Danish MPs suggested the country should follow France’s proposal to confiscate the passports of those seen as a risk of travelling to Syria.

 

The Swedish Security Service (Säpo) also said it was closely watching the Norway threat.
