Nyon’s Paléo music festival off to muddy start

The 39th Paléo music festival, getting under way on Tuesday in Nyon in the canton of Vaud, is struggling with muddy grounds after heavy rain.

But organizers of the Swiss festival, featuring the likes of British rocker Elton John (set to perform on Thursday night) and Belgian star Stromae (Wednesday night), say they are confident all is ready, noting that fair weather is forecast for most of the week.

“Except for cloudy and rainy front, everything looks good for this 39th edition,” president of the festival Daniel Rosselat, who is also Nyon mayor, told a press conference on Monday.

The festival was forced to implement its “rain plan” after precipitation of around 50 millimetres over two days.

Most of the parking area around the site of the festival will be closed because of the inundation.

Festivalgoers arriving in cars will be directed to park in the centre of Nyon where shuttle buses will transport people to the festival site north of the town centre.

A campsite for visitors to the six-day festival opened on Sunday in “mud and good spirits”, according to a blog on the festival’s website.

“We have a promise of nice weather for the rest of the week,” Rosselat said.

An estimated 230,000 spectators are expected at the festival, which runs until Sunday.

Other performers at the festival include James Blunt, the British singer-songwriter who has a home in nearby Verbier, The Prodigy, Placebo and The Black Keys, as well as French stars such as chansonnier Maxime LeForestier, Vanessa Paradis.

The festival has several stages and as in past years a “world village”, paying hommage this year to music from the Andes.

While the festival is largely sold out, 1,500 tickets will go on sale on the internet each morning, in addition to selected sales points (not on site).

Party

It’s Carnival time in Switzerland with colourful parades and all-night parties on across the country. Some of the biggest events this weekend are going on in Lucerne, St Gallen, Sion, and Bellinzona but there plenty of other carnival-themed events in smaller towns and villages, all of which are worth visiting in their own right. Here is our guide to Switzerland’s Carnival season to get you inspired.

Learn

Take a guided tour in English of Zurich’s hugely impressive Swiss National Museum, just near the main train station. The meeting point is in the foyer at 11am on Saturday March 2nd, and the tour examining both Switzerland's past and present lasts an hour. There is more information here.

Laugh

UK–Irish comedian Jimmy Carr will be delivering his blend of dry, deadpan (and often filthy) humour at Basel’s RhyPark venue this Friday, March 1st. Tickets for the British Comedy Award winner’s performance are 66 francs, although there are cheaper rates for students. Read more here.

Admire

On Saturday March 2nd, the 'Le Lac' villa designed by Swiss-French architect Le Corbusier will open again to the public for the spring season. Built in 1923, the small UNESCO- recognized house in Corseaux on the shores of Lake Geneva is described as a “little gem of ingenuity and functionalism” and serves as a sign post for Le Corbusier’s later work.

The villas is only open on Saturdays and Sundays from 2pm to 5pm. You can find out more here.
