Eight people were hospitalised on Saturday due to an ammonia leak at Copenhagen Airport.

The smell of ammonia in the airport’s baggage claim area was reported shortly after 1pm and several people also reported feeling ill.

The baggage area was cleared and evacuated and health officials took measurements that revealed that the concentration of ammonia in the area was low enough to not require further action.

The source of the smell was determined to be a leak in the airport’s cooling system.

Copenhagen Police said in a press release that eight individuals were taken to hospital for treatment, but did not provide additional information.

By 4.30pm, police announced that the situation in the airport was back to normal.

Copenhagen Airport released a short statement addressing the incident.

“We apologise for the inconvenience this extended waiting time in the baggage reclaim area has had for our passengers,” it said. “Passengers who feel discomfort after being in the arrivals area during this period are recommended to seek medical advice.”
