Botox increasingly popular among Danes

The number of Danes undergoing cosmetic procedures to improve their appearance increased by 30 percent in just one year and the numbers are likely to keep growing.

More and more Danes are changing their appearance with the help of cosmetic treatments like Botox and injectable fillers.

The Danish Society for Aesthetic Plastic Surgery says that procedures to remove wrinkles and other perceived imperfections are now “fiercely popular” amongst Danes.

The society estimates that there were 50,000 Botox treatments and 60,000 wrinkle-smoothing injection treatments in 2013, representing a 30 percent increase over the year before.

According to the society’s chairman, Andreas Printzlau, the figures are likely to increase even further as these types of appearance-altering procedures become more socially acceptable.

“Temporary treatments are considered less intrusive, so therefore there is a greater acceptance of them than of cosmetic surgery,” he told Berlingske. “And the results are more subtle. People think, “Hmm, maybe I’ll try that.’”

In a survey conducted for Berlingske, seven percent of female respondents reported undergoing a cosmetic procedure. For men, the figure was two percent.

The survey showed that young Danes in particular are open to cosmetic procedures, with one in five respondents aged 18-35 saying they would consider taking actions to improve their appearance in the future.

Printzlau said he was disappointed that so many young women are undergoing Botox treatment.

“They maybe think that starting Botox at a young age will result in not having wrinkles and furrows later in life,” he said. “But you risk getting a doll face, a fall without expression and character, which I think is not attractive.”
