The Guinean prisoner, encarcerated in the Bellechasse jail for narcotics offences, is accused of having organized the trafficking of more than five kilograms of cocaine over the telephone from his cell, the Tribune de Genève newspaper reported.
Investigators said the drugs were stockpiled in several apartments around Geneva by two other men on the instructions of the 34-year-old prisoner, known only as ‘D’.
His accomplices – a 20-year-old from Somalia and a 23-year-old from the Ivory Coast – are accused of hiding the drugs in their homes and reselling them.
The trial of all three should be held by the end of the year, the newspaper said.
It’s not the first controversy to hit Bellechasse prison.
In 2012, an insufficient number of wardens was blamed for the escape of five prisoners, while in 2008 some 60 inmates undertook a rebellion over conditions at the jail.
